BLEACH BYPASS

I tend to go for fairly saturated colour. But I am open to experimenting with different techniques and colour palettes. I’ve recently discovered a technique called Bleach Bypass. This is what I did to achieve the desaturated skin tone in the Red Hoodie shot above. I’ve been experimenting with this technique, so called because it copies a process originally used in motion picture film processing laboratories and used in films such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “Se7en”.

It’s pretty easy to achieve the same effect in Photoshop: create a duplicate layer and change the Blending Mode to Overlay, add a Saturation Adjustment Layer and reduce the saturation by about 50%, then finally add a Levels Adjustment Layer and tweak the levels by moving the left black arrow in slightly and the middle grey arrow to the left slightly. I kept the hoodie saturated by masking it in all the adjustment layers so the Bleach Bypass didn’t affect it.

Here are a few more examples I’ve been experimenting with.

Hi John. Wow, those photos of the model are absolutely sensational!!! Love the juggling and the close ups and the cheekiness of the shots. And what a physique he's got, beautifully captured. Man, I've got to get to the gym!
